I have been retrieving email from my Hotmail.ca account into a Gmail account for quite a while then, April 29, 2016 it just stopped. Gmail reported, 'unknown user or bad password'. To resolve it, logon to Hotmail, click the gear icon, Options, Mail, Accounts, Pop and IMAP, Let devices and apps use POP = Yes, Save. Over in Gmail, got to Settings, Accounts and Import, Check mail from other accounts, Check mail now. (You might need to re-enter your password.) That's what worked for me, your mileage may vary.
